Mombasa

120 kilometers from Malindi. It is easily reached, at any time of day, by car, cab or matatu (the local bus-taxis whose drivers are often prodigal with tales and anecdotes, allowing you to learn about the customs of the local people). Mombasa is Kenya's second largest city. It is undoubtedly a chaotic city, but the atmosphere is pleasant: it proudly boasts a 2,500-year-old past based on Roman and Egyptian adventure narratives. During a visit to Mombasa, you certainly cannot miss a stop at the old city with its maze of narrow streets, mosques and dwellings perched on the slope, sloping down to the Dhow harbor. The following stops are also recommended: Fort Jesus, the only vestige of early Portuguese rule; the Jain temple; and the Mandhry mosque.
