Marafa Malindi
Half day excursion, afternoon.
It is called Nyari, "the place that breaks itself", because the earth really seems fractured, but this place is better known as Hell's Kitchen, "the devil's kitchen". The Marafa Canyon is located an hour's drive from Malindi and the journey is evocative, traveled on red earth between large clearings, villages and acacia woods. Its colors change depending on the time of day, reaching a fiery red at sunset, therefore the best time to visit it.
The legend about Marafa has it that its fertile hills, today crossed during the rainy season by a tributary of the Galana river, were once inhabited by a family so rich that instead of water they used the milk of their own cows to wash themselves. In a biblical parallel with Sodom and Gomorrah, the city of Marafa, having encountered the wrath of God for its waste, was submerged by a great flood which created the chasm which today is called the Devil's Kitchen.
